Entry from: Tikal, Guatemala Entry Title: "Tikal Ruinas" Entry: "Spent the day at tikal ruinas, which are one of the more spectacular ruins of the mayan people set in dense thick jungle. Though tikal isnt as detailed as say palenque or copan, the sheer height of these ruins is the star attraction. You may think that a 65m ruin isnt so high, but after climbing the steep stairs; often almost at a vertical with the cliff face; you quickly change your mind. Im not one usually scared of heights, but when I was on top of number V and there was only 50cm of unstable rock between me and death, it gets a little nerve racking. The ruins itself isnt so spectacular on a large scale as is angkor wat, but they are spectacular in their sheer height and the fact that less than half the ruins have been excavated. It was interesting to sit 60m atop the ruinas looking above the canopy of the jungle, listening and watching howler monkeys go crazy in the trees, and gazing beyond the horizon .. all the way to belize! Samson and I thought that we had struck romance jackpot when we found a great ruin with the perfect sunset vantage point empty 10 minutes before sunset... but alas five minutes later, people from atop other ruins that spotted us on top of our ruin came rushing over since we clearly had the better vantage point ...
